Az eredetileg Easy Cure-nek nevezett csapatot 1976-ban hívta életre három régi iskolatárs, Robert Smith (ének, gitár), Michael Dempsey (bőgő) és Laurence "Lol" Tolhurst (dobok).
A banda sötét, idegtépő gitárhangzással tarkított popzenét játszott, irodalmi ihletésű szövegekkel megspékelve.
