Anthony La Paglia: Goodbye ‘WAT’, CBS Cancels It.

Rome – “Economic reasons,” in this way ALP, Jack Malone from WAT, explains to us with disappointment why CBS cancelled the world hit drama series airing in Italy on Raidue and Steel (two of our network stations). “They can cancel a show even if it has great ratings,” adds La Paglia, an Australian with Italian origins, ex soccer player, now show star. WAT ended the 19th May with a high in ratings and an average of 11 millions viewers. “WB, who co-produces the show with CBS and Paramount, would have wanted to renew the show, but CBS was determined in ending it due to economic reasons,” La Paglia tells us during an interview held in a hotel in Rome.

From what has been told, CBS had to cancel a WB’s show. CBS preferred to cancel WAT and renew Cold Case. “I was not surprised by this decision. There had been many signals for the last six months and when the press started talking about it and CBS didn’t say anything, I read their silence as an assent,” the actor adds not hiding his disappointment “above all for the ways the news has been announced.” In the same time, La Paglia maintains, “The decision has been a relief. After 7 years of great success, I can take control over my life again without working 14 hours a day.

I will not accept any job next year.” :(

La Paglia says he actually realized WAT’s success when he went to Europe, in Paris, in Madrid, in Rome he was surrounded by people. “I guess WAT is loved (famous) all over the world because it is a crime drama ‘full of humanity’. Each episode doesn’t begin with a body and a killer to find, but with a missing person, who can be alive or dead, kidnapped or gone away, and the viewer investigates with you. In short, it is an interactive TV prototype.”

Ex-soccer player, now popular star (he won an Emmy for ‘Frasier’ and a Tony for the Broadway remake of ‘A View From the Bridge’), Anthony La Paglia doesn’t speak Italian because his father wanted he integrated in the best way (sorry, I hope you can understand) and so he never spoke in Italian to him. He is proud of a thing, “I understood I was not good enough for soccer, even if I played as a pro – he played as goalkeeper in the national team (really? I didn’t know this!) and he is co-owner of Sidney FC – I had not the right winning mentality. Then a good acting school and the right opportunities made the man I am now.”
