There hasn't been a good soccer-based movie in a long time -- you have to go back to "Bend It Like Beckham" in 2003, if not before. But Gerard Butler will try to change that.

The Scottish actor (and Celtic fan) this week began shooting "Playing the Field," a story about soccer, the suburbs and sexual attraction. The sport will serve as a backdrop for what is a kind of "Shampoo" set amid American manicured lawns.

The project has a transatlantic feel -- Butler and Jessica Biel play an estranged couple, with the cast also including Judy Greer and Catherine Zeta-Jones, who 24 Frames has learned have recently signed on, joining Dennis Quaid and Uma Thurman.

Italian director Gabriele Muccino ("The Pursuit of Happyness," the original Italian-language "Last Kiss") is behind the camera; in addition to Butler, Heidi Jo Markel, Kevin Misher, Jonathan Mostow and Alan Siegel are producing.

According to a person familiar with the production who was not authorized to speak about it publicly, Stuart Blumberg, the "Kids Are All Right" co-writer who garnered an Oscar nomination for penning the family dramedy, recently came on to write a new draft of Rob Fox's script.

Originally conceived as a Little League story (title: "Confessions of a Little League Coach") the project has morphed into a tale about footy. Basically, it involves an accomplished, Beckham-like pro (Butler) who after living a playboy life throughout Europe returns to his estranged American wife and child to try to reconcile with them. He begins coaching youth soccer to show his commitment.

But things get sticky when a number of the local women take a shine to him, including characters played by Thurman (Quaid's wife), Zeta Jones (a vixen newscaster) and Greer (a hot-and-bothered housewife). The comedy has distribution around the world and will be seeking a U.S. home.

With the MLS season underway and Champions League play hitting the quarterfinals, thoughts (for some) turn to soccer. And, perhaps, to soccer movies.

Arnold Schwarzenegger's below-the-belt blow on Gerard Butler

Scot Gerard Butler has had his amazing physique in 300 outrageously put under question by none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger, who apparently claims it was computer generated. However, we have the proof that the aged Terminator star is misinformed...
It’s been reported today that the former California governor has exploded the “myth Gerard Butler was ripped and toned for his role as a Spartan hero in cult action film 300” – something that’ll be sure to enrage the hunky Scottish pin-up.
Schwarzenegger made the apparent “discovery” after approaching the 300 producer Mark Canton, asking for details about the fitness regimen Butler adopted for the hit film.

The impressed Terminator star reportedly wanted to track down the Scot's trainer and hire him to get him back into shape following his spell as California Governor, which just recently ended.

Schwarzenegger told Entertainment Weekly magazine: “I said to Mark Canton, 'You have got to get a hold of this guy (Butler). I want to know what his training regimen is.'

“Canton said, 'What are you talking about? (That look) cost me a lot of money.'”

However, standing at Butler’s side like a brave Spartan, and ready to take Schwarzenegger on, we’ve discovered behind-the-scenes footage that proves that the Scot’s body was entirely the product of his own making. (Well, alongside the training and fitness experts that will have assisted him in getting into shape, of course.) Here’s our first evidence, showing the sparsely clothed star as he was being filmed.
As if that wasn’t enough – and we know some of you will want to be as thorough as possible checking into Gerard’s physique – here’s a second video showing why as King he had to look bigger than the other actors, and talking about the amazing amount of work he put in.

Gerard Butler will romance three Hollywood beauties in his next film project - he's signed up to star alongside Jessica Biel, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Uma Thurman.

The Scottish actor will portray a European soccer star in Playing The Field opposite Biel as his estranged wife. His character moves to the U.S. to make amends with his partner only to be charmed by a number of other women, including a neighbour's wife, played by Thurman, and a saucy newsreader, played by Zeta-Jones. Judy Greer will also feature as a housewife who falls for Butler's character, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The film will be directed by Italian moviemaker Gabriele Muccino.
