'Walking Dead' cast puts their money on zombies

AMC is banking on zombies being the super natural phenomenon that can finally put a stake in the sparkly vampire craze for good.
"The Walking Dead," premiering Halloween night, follows the struggles of a band of people trying to survive in the face of a zombie epidemic that's turned most of humanity into a limping, mindless, groaning mess of decaying flesh.
It's gory. It's violent. It's shocking. It's humorous at times and, according to the series' stars, it was a big risk.
"It seemed like something that would require a really insane scale to pull off, and because it was such a risk, it was sort of intoxicating," says Sarah Wayne Callies, who plays Lori Grimes, a mother trying to keep her son safe.

"There's a lot on TV that's understandably derivative, and this was something so utterly new -- not only was it new, but it had to be done right, the bad version of this show is an unwatchable piece of poo."

Fortunately, says Robert Kirkman, the brains behind the bestselling comics that the series is based on, "We didn't do that version."

"There's nothing campy or cute [about 'The Walking Dead'], it's all done real," says Jon Bernthal, who plays Shane Walsh, the de facto leader of the survivors.

Although "zombies had never touched my life before," says British actor Andrew Lincoln (County Sheriff Rick Grimes on the search for his missing family), he became an instant "zombie geek" after reading the pilot script and the comics. "I was thrilled and excited by [the pilot], but I also found it funny and moving, which was unexpected," he says.
